Fourth Step (and Dark Lord Day) Ride touring 45/70

No, this isn't about making a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year.

We'll take the lakefront trail south from the clock tower. If you don't want to start from the clock tower, you can join up anywhere along the lakefront trail. Just let me know where so we can look for you.

Special beer this time: Dark Lord, a gargantuan Russian Imperial Stout with a reverse cascading head that billows the color of burnt oil, like the Dark Lord rising from his black primordial beginnings. Its resonant vinous aroma has been described as cherries, sweet malt, molasses, burnt currants, plums with a port wine alcohol undertow. Mochachino notes buried within. Motor oil consistency. Hellishly yet divinely smooth. The first sip coats your palate with a thick charred fruit and chocolate blanket. Alcohol burn wiggles its way down your throat.

This is the only day this year you can buy Dark Lord. Dark Lord Day is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, eat, listen to live music, and generally have a great time. The festival requires a ticket. No admission will be granted without the original purchaser being present to validate their ticket with their valid state or federal ID. Tickets are non-transferable.

45 mi if you take the Metra back, 70 if you ride both ways. 16-19 mph.

New beer since last time: Tiberian Inquisitor, a Belgian-style ale aged for one year in French oak.

Cycle for Change touring Up to 100

If you’re concerned about our climate, want to learn more from experts, help raise awareness and of course have fun, please join us on the second annual Cycle for Change ride from the Lincoln Park Zoo to the Milwaukee County Zoo. This is a ride organized in conjunction with the Lincoln Park Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, Milwaukee Zoo, American Association of Zoo Keepers, Polar Bears International, Chicago Cycling Club and the Evanston Bike Club.

There is a $50.00 ($40.00 for members of the sponsoring organizations) to pay for SAG support. Excess will be donated to Trees for You and Me program (Learn more Polar Bear Forest).

Our ride host will be Philip Fensterer, a zookeeper with the Oregon Zoo and an Artic Ambassador with Polar Bears International.

The ride will start at the Lincoln Park Zoo and will take us along the shores of Lake Michigan with our first stop at Ft. Sheridan for brunch. Then onwards to Kenosha for snacks and finally to the Milwaukee County Zoo for dinner. This is a sag wagon supported ride with snacks, drinks and light mechanical assist.

As a special treat to participants, Philip and the staff at the Brookfield Zoo will give a talk and a special behind the scenes look at the Polar Bear exhibit at the Brookfield Zoo on June 27th at 6:30 PM before the ride. We're limited to 30 people for this special presentation so please RSVP early.

There is a limited number of riders that we can support for the full ride so if you’re interested please RSVP quickly (we’re OK if you withdraw later but we need to get an idea for planning). To RSVP, click on the "RSVP" link at the top of this section.

For questions, send email to Philip Fensterer and Howard Lo at (fensterer3@mac.com;hloworld@gmail.com)

14th Annual Mosey on to Moody's touring 40

Join Joe Dickstein on a magical mystery tour all over the North side. You'll mosey along a circuitous route: six different bike paths, all the way to the Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe and back. Your reward: a stop at Moody's Pub in Edgewater for burgers and brews at the end.

New beer since last time: who knows what they'll come up with!

45 miles total if you take the Metra back, 70 if you ride both ways. 16-19 mph. We don't make many stops. We don't always stay together. My goal is to get there before they open (at noon), so we don't have to wait as long to get in (it's the second-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). Returning, it's more relaxed. Bring money, a lock, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago.

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra schedule, Metra rules, and, to save us all a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

No, this isn't about making direct amends to the people we've harmed whenever doing so is possible and won't injure them or others.

It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year.

September is National Century Month, so this step is a century -- if you ride to and from the start, or if I work another 5 miles into the route.

We start by taking the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let me know where so we can look for you.

New beer since last time: War Mullet, a double IPA that makes you want to grow a mullet (if you don't already have one) and go to war (if you haven't already gone).

35 miles to Three Floyds + 10 miles to Flossmoor Station = 45 miles. Take the Metra Electic home or ride another 30 miles to Brixie's = 75 miles. Take the BNSF home or ride another 20 miles to Revolution, West Lakeview, and back to the clock tower = 95 miles. 15-18 mph. Second Step Ride touring 45/70

No, this isn't about coming to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. Plus you can qualify for the the F-12 Award. This year, there's a more predictable schedule -- the 4th Saturday of every month -- and others have opportunities to lead, since I won't be able to make it consistently.

The ride takes the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let the group know where so they can look for you.

The (Fairly) Fast Ride to Hegewisch, Hammond, and Beyond on the new Monon Bike Trail - Part 20 training 50

REMOTE START: Remote Start at 31st Street Beach House. This is the fastest-paced version of the rides to the south this summer and the annual visit to the far south and the 20th in a series of rides through Hegewisch.

We'll head to the most remote corner of Chicago, Hegewisch, founded as a separate town in the 1880s. We'll head down the lakefront and the Burnham Greenway. We'll blow through Hegewisch and continue on to Hammond. We'll navigate through Hammond on the new Monon Bike Trail (which runs along a former rail line) south through Hammond toward Fisher Road in Munster. We'll see how far we get by 10:45 AM and then turn around. We won't be going 15 to 20 the entire time but we will move along as much as possible based on wind and heat. The maximum speed will be around 20. If you think that the pace may be too fast, skip this one. If you think it is too slow, you can go ahead of the group but on your own.

Free parking is usually available on South Rhodes Ave just west of the lakefront and south of 31st Street, or ride your bike to the start to add some more miles to your trip. We'll shoot for getting back around 1 PM, No lunch. Once we get back to the lakefront trail, you can set your own pace the last 5 miles back to 31st Street.

Bring money, government-issued ID, a lock, lights since it's one of the shortest days of the year, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago.

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, conversation about this ride, Metra schedule, Metra rules, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

No, this isn't about coming to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year! Now there's a consistent schedule -- the 4th Saturday of every month -- others have opportunities to lead (I can't make it every time), and you can qualify for the F-12 Award.

Dark Lord Day (and Fourth Step) Ride touring 45/50/55/70 mi

No, this isn't about making a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. Now there's a consistent schedule -- the 4th Saturday of every month -- others have opportunities to lead (I can't make it every time), and you can qualify for the F-12 Award.

Dark Lord is a gargantuan Russian imperial stout with a reverse cascading head that billows the color of burnt oil, like the Dark Lord rising from his black primordial beginnings. Its resonant vinous aroma is of cherries, sweet malt, molasses, burnt currants, and plums with a port wine undertow. Mochachino notes are buried within. It has the consistency of hellishly yet divinely smooth motor oil. The first sip coats your palate with a thick charred-fruit-and-chocolate blanket. Alcohol burn then wiggles its way down your throat.

Dark Lord Day is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, eat, listen to live music, and generally have a great time. It's also the only day of the year you can buy Dark Lord. The festival requires a ticket (but the ride doesn't). No admission to the festival will be granted without the original purchaser being present to validate their ticket with their state or federal ID or passport. Tickets are non-transferable.

If you like to eat, ride a bike, meet new people, explore different parts of the city, but dedicate only half a day doing it at a time, this series of group bicycle rides is for you!  The "Breakfast Club" will ride at a moderatel pace to a different neighborhood, stop for breakfast at a pre-selected restaurant, and be back around noon.

Join us as we ride to  Elly's Pancake House, 1624 Milwaukee Ave, Glenview, www.ellysglenview.com.  This will be a longer ride to the suburbs so make sure you are prepared for a longer, faster ride and fuel up before coming out to ride.  Bring money for breakfast, a lock for your bike and a helmet for your head.

Monday South Shore Fitness Ride training 20

This is a weekly one plus hour fitness ride right after work. We'll depart from Roosevelt Road underpass sharply at the Start Time and ride at a brisk pace to the South Shore Cultural Center and return. Note that the Start Time is seasonal as we would like to finish before it gets dark.

This ride is geared towards riders who are looking to stay fit (should work well if you're training for your first century or triathlon) and can use the encouragement from a group to push just "a little harder". As the season progresses we can move off the Lake Front trail to work on more speed and technique. Road bike only.

Because the Lake Front trail has pedestrians, we're limiting the group to ten riders for safety. Please RSVP.

Monday Night Intro to Group Rides training 25

Curious to find out what training rides are all about - but aren't sure if you can ride at 25 mph? Here's your chance. This ride has the look and feel of a training ride, but at a slower pace. Emphasis will be placed on smooth riding techniques, paceline etiquette, practice sprints and building confidence on the open road. There may be a few designated sprint areas; however, we will always regroup before heading on.

These first few weeks will get dark quickly so lights are mandatory. If you have never ridden in a group before we focus on steady, smooth riding and utilizing a rotating double paceline (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow_ndVj5oME). Weather is predicted to be about 56 degrees Farenheit and there is a 60% chance of rain. Due to the introductory nature of this ride and the early darkness the ride may be cancelled for safety's sake if the forecast does not look very promising. I should post any cancellation by 1 PM the day of the ride if applicable. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Note: Please be sure your tires are pumped to right pressure and wear a helmet. Lighting is also recommended for early season rides, gets dark fast.
