Fourth Step (and Dark Lord Day) Ride | touring | 45/70 | No, this isn't about making a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. We'll take the lakefront trail south from the clock tower. If you don't want to start from the clock tower, you can join up anywhere along the lakefront trail. Just let me know where so we can look for you. Special beer this time: Dark Lord, a gargantuan Russian Imperial Stout with a reverse cascading head that billows the color of burnt oil, like the Dark Lord rising from his black primordial beginnings. Its resonant vinous aroma has been described as cherries, sweet malt, molasses, burnt currants, plums with a port wine alcohol undertow. Mochachino notes buried within. Motor oil consistency. Hellishly yet divinely smooth. The first sip coats your palate with a thick charred fruit and chocolate blanket. Alcohol burn wiggles its way down your throat. This is the only day this year you can buy Dark Lord. Dark Lord Day is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, eat, listen to live music, and generally have a great time. The festival requires a ticket. No admission will be granted without the original purchaser being present to validate their ticket with their valid state or federal ID. Tickets are non-transferable. 45 mi if you take the Metra back, 70 if you ride both ways. 16-19 mph. |

There's a Jewel and Starbucks at the plaza, so remember to bring some cash for snacks / coffee etc. or pack your personal favorites. Steve Kramer is proud to once again serve as your ride leader and host. Pre-registration or advance sign-up is not required and there's no cost to ride. PROST! |

Tenth Step Ride | touring | 45/70 | No, this isn't about continuing to take a personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitting it. It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. We start by taking the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let me know where so we can look for you. New beer since last time: who knows what they'll come up with! 45 miles total if you take the Metra back, 70 if you ride both ways. 16-19 mph. We don't make many stops. We don't always stay together. My goal is to get there before they open (at noon), so we don't have to wait as long to get in (it's the second-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). Returning, it's more relaxed. Bring money, a lock, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago. Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra schedule, Metra rules, and, to save us all a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver. |

Ninth Step Almost-Century | touring | 45/75/95 | No, this isn't about making direct amends to the people we've harmed whenever doing so is possible and won't injure them or others. It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. September is National Century Month, so this step is a century -- if you ride to and from the start, or if I work another 5 miles into the route. We start by taking the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let me know where so we can look for you. New beer since last time: War Mullet, a double IPA that makes you want to grow a mullet (if you don't already have one) and go to war (if you haven't already gone). 35 miles to Three Floyds + 10 miles to Flossmoor Station = 45 miles. Take the Metra Electic home or ride another 30 miles to Brixie's = 75 miles. Take the BNSF home or ride another 20 miles to Revolution, West Lakeview, and back to the clock tower = 95 miles. 15-18 mph. My goal is to get to Three Floyds before they open (at noon) so we don't have to wait as long to get in (it's the second-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). Bring money, a lock, water and snacks to have en route, panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago, and a light since we're staying out late. Online resources: Google map (revised 9/24), cue sheet (revised 9/24), Metra Electric Flossmoor schedule, BNSF Brookfield schedule, Metra rules, and, to save us all a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver. |

Three Floyds and/or Flossmoor Station Ride | social | 35/40/60 | OK, not everyone loves Three Floyds. Different spokes for different folks! Now you have the option of going to Flossmoor Station instead. (It remains an option to go to Flossmoor Station in addition.) We depart Daley Plaza at 9:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 9:45 AM. We stay together (more or less) down to I-80, then split up into Three Floyds and Flossmoor Station groups. The goal of the Three Floyds group is to get to Three Floyds by noon, when they open, and not have to wait outside. Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. Depending on the weather, however, returning from Flossmoor Station via Metra can be a very attractive option. Total distance: Three Floyds round trip 60 miles, Three Floyds and Flossmoor Station one-way 40 miles, Flossmoor Station one-way 35 miles. We ask that you RSVP if attending. The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-16 mph with a short break at Wolf Lake. Mid-January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems. Checklist: Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, conversation about this ride, Metra schedule, and Metra rules. The inaugural Three Floyds ride was conceived and organized by Mark Sinclair and took place on January 14, 2006. As many of you know, Mark died on April 14 of that year, at age 34, a few days after suffering a brain aneurysm. It was Mark's hope that it would become an annual event. Thanks, PS: Riding with the Three Floyds group doubles as the First Step of the 2014 Twelve Steps Challenge. Make it every month and win a nifty prize! |

Dark Lord Day (and Fourth Step) Ride | touring | 45/70 mi | No, this isn't about making a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. Now there's a consistent schedule -- the 4th Saturday of every month -- others have opportunities to lead (I can't make it this time unless a kind soul helps me out with a ticket), and you can qualify for the F-12 Award. Dark Lord is a gargantuan Russian imperial stout with a reverse cascading head that billows the color of burnt oil, like the Dark Lord rising from his black primordial beginnings. Its resonant vinous aroma is of cherries, sweet malt, molasses, burnt currants, and plums with a port wine undertow. Mochachino notes are buried within. It has the consistency of hellishly yet divinely smooth motor oil. The first sip coats your palate with a thick charred-fruit-and-chocolate blanket. Alcohol burn then wiggles its way down your throat. Dark Lord Day is a festival where participants can meet other beer enthusiasts, sample beers from all over the world, eat, listen to live music, and generally have a great time. It's also the only day of the year you can buy Dark Lord. The festival requires a ticket (but the ride doesn't). No admission to the festival will be granted without the original purchaser being present to validate their ticket with their state or federal ID. Tickets are non-transferable. The ride takes the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. We'll head to the most remote corner of Chicago, Hegewisch, founded as a separate town in the 1880s. We'll head down the lakefront and the Burnham Greenway. We'll navigate through Hammond on the new Monon Bike Trail (which runs along a former rail line) south through Hammond toward Fisher Road in Munster. We'll see how far we get by 10:45 AM and then turn around. We won't be going 15 to 20 the entire time but we will move along as much as possible based on wind and heat. The maximum speed will be around 20. If you think that the pace may be too fast, skip this one. If you think it is too slow, you can go ahead of the group but on your own. Free parking is usually available on South Rhodes Ave just west of the lakefront and south of 31st Street, or ride your bike to the start to add some more miles to your trip. Pilsen Architecture and Mural Ride | social | 10 | Pilsen has historically been a neighborhood for American immigrants. These generations of immigrants built an extraordinary urban landscape. In the 19th century, Bohemian settlers constructed many mixed-use buildings based on the style of their homeland. In the 1970s, murals began as a cooperative effort between Slavs and Mexicans and large murals surfaced throughout Pilsen. Today, an initiative to restore and create new murals have preserved this vibrant and artistic neighborhood. First, we'll meet at the National Museum of Mexican Art, located at 1852 W 19th St. The museum is very close to public transit, the Damen bus and the Pink Line. We'll ride through the neighborhood and see beautiful ornate churches and historic buildings reminicent of Eastern Europe baroque architecture erected by Bohemian settlers. We will also be stopping (somewhat frequently) throughout the neighborhood and looking at many old and modern murals. We'll be seeing art by Francisco Mendoza, Jose Guerrero, Gabriel Villa, Chema Skandal, Jake Castro, and many others. Join us afterwards for lunch at one of the many delicious Mexican restaurants near the heart of Pilsen (18th St). There are also other events around Pilsen and Chicago that you can visit after the ride: Pilsen Open Studios, Open House Chicago hosted by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, and the annual Day of the Dead exhibition at the National Museum of Mexican Art. |

Now there's a consistent schedule -- the 4th Saturday of every month -- others have opportunities to lead (I can't make it every time), and you can qualify for the F-12 Award. The ride takes the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let the group know where so they can look for you. 45 miles total if you take the Metra back, 70 if you ride both ways. 14-17 mph. I like to get there before they open at noon (it's the third-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). Bring money, government-issued ID, a lock, lights since it's one of the shortest days of the year, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago. Annual New Year's Day "Weather Be Damned" Ride | social | 12 | Start the New Year on the right foot with the Chicago Cycling Club's annual New Year's Day ride. Neither snow, sleet, ice nor hangovers will prevent an intrepid group of cyclists from riding on the first day of the year 2015. Embark on a 10-12 mile cycling odyssey that includes the obligatory brunch/lunch stop at a restaurant in a great Chicago neighborhood. Again this year, the ride will start in West Town at the Eckhart Park field house (which will not be open). We will return to this area for those who want to end there. There is ample free parking on Chicago or Noble or Elizabeth for those who drive. The Chicago & Milwaukee Blue Line stop is just a few blocks away, the 56 Milwaukee bus stops at Chicago, and the 66 Chicago bus stops at Noble. So easy to get to! Snuggle up in your winter riding gear and come on out. Please bring locks, money for lunch and your helmet. If you want to just meet us for lunch, we will arrive at the Red Apple on Milwaukee in Logan Square, 3121 N. Milwaukee between 11:00 and 11:30 and will be in the back room. The buffet for New Year's Day is quite extensive and includes a glass of champagne, but the price is $24.99. http://www.redapplebuffet.com/specials#newyear The ride to the Red Apple is about 7 miles from Eckart Park. |

10th Annual Three Floyds Brewpub Ride | social | 40/60 | There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brewpub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006. The beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and they take their cuisine as seriously as they do their beer. Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. We depart Daley Plaza at 9:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 9:45 AM. I like to get there before they open at noon; it's the third-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line. After we complete our "rounds", we may be less swift, so there are different return options: ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra (40 miles), ride to 100th or 93rd and take the J14 or the Metra (45), ride to 71st and take the J14 (50), and of course ride all the way (60). The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-15 mph with a short break at 7-Eleven. January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems. Checklist: Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, conversation about this ride, Flossmoor Metra train schedule, 93rd St Metra train schedule, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Metra rules, CTA guide, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver. The inaugural Three Floyds ride was conceived and organized by Mark Sinclair and took place on January 14, 2006. As many of you know, Mark died on April 14 of that year, at age 34, a few days after suffering a brain aneurysm. It was Mark's hope that it would become an annual event. PS: This ride doubles as the First Step of the 2015 Twelve Steps Challenge. Ride to Three Floyds every month and win a nifty prize! |

Dark Lord Day (and Fourth Step) Ride | touring | 45/50/55/70 mi | No, this isn't about making a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year. Now there's a consistent schedule -- the 4th Saturday of every month -- others have opportunities to lead (I can't make it every time), and you can qualify for the F-12 Award. No admission to the festival will be granted without the original purchaser being present to validate their ticket with their state or federal ID or passport. Tickets are non-transferable. The ride takes the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let the group know where so they can look for you. 45 miles total if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 50 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 55 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 70 if you ride both ways. 16-19 mph. We'll depart from Roosevelt Road underpass sharply at the Start Time and ride at a brisk pace to the South Shore Cultural Center and return. Note that the Start Time is seasonal as we would like to finish before it gets dark. This ride is geared towards riders who are looking to stay fit (should work well if you're training for your first century or triathlon) and can use the encouragement from a group to push just "a little harder". As the season progresses we can move off the Lake Front trail to work on more speed and technique. Road bike only. Because the Lake Front trail has pedestrians, we're limiting the group to ten riders for safety. Please RSVP. 2016 Weather Be Damned Ride | social | 10 | Holy cow, where has the year gone?! The annual Weather be Damned New Years Day ride is fast approaching and this year NYD is on a Friday so you will have all weekend to recover. Note that this year the ride will start a half hour later at 10:30am and we should be at the restaurant, barring any flats (that evil word), by noon. And note that per my psychic non-abilities that I have predicted that there will be no snow or freezing cold or ice because we are experiencing an El Nino winter, at least that is my hope :-) As in the past we will do a nice, slow and gentle ride before ending at the Panera at 400 West Division (at Clybourn) for lunch. Bring a lock for your bike, cash for lunch, layers to stay warm and a helmet for your keppie to keep your melon safe. Please RSVP so we have a good count.

Ancien will let us bring our bikes inside if we would like to. If you do not want to ride back, there is a Metra Electric stop right at 51st/53rd with trains going to Millenium station at 11:55, 12:45 and 1:45. Depending on the wind, we will ride back either along the lakefront or a reverse of our ride down. Don't forget your helmet, a lock, and money! |

Monday Night Intro to Group Rides | training | 25 | Curious to find out what training rides are all about - but aren't sure if you can ride at 25 mph? Here's your chance. This ride has the look and feel of a training ride, but at a slower pace. Emphasis will be placed on smooth riding techniques, paceline etiquette, practice sprints and building confidence on the open road. There may be a few designated sprint areas; however, we will always regroup before heading on. These first few weeks will get dark quickly so lights are mandatory. If you have never ridden in a group before we focus on steady, smooth riding and utilizing a rotating double paceline (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow_ndVj5oME). Weather is predicted to be about 56 degrees Farenheit and there is a 60% chance of rain. Due to the introductory nature of this ride and the early darkness the ride may be cancelled for safety's sake if the forecast does not look very promising. I should post any cancellation by 1 PM the day of the ride if applicable. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Some items to bring with you: Pump or C02 cartridge + chuck Spare tube Basic bike tool (allen keys and such) helmet water/snack

Bike to your Park: Ride to Pullman National Monument | social | 35 | Adventure Cycling declared this date "Ride to Your Park" day, so we will ride to the closest thing Chicago has to a National Park. Our ride will start south on the Lakefront Trail to city streets to a short bike tour of Pullman. There will be time to grab a bite at the Cal-Harbor Restaurant, 540 E. 115th Street, before we head back to the south end of the Trail to return to Queen's Landing. The ride to Pullman will be about 17 miles. If you prefer, you can take Metra Electric from 111th Street back downtown. Return time is an estimate and will depend on the group pace. Anne Alt is co-leading this ride. |

2017 Champagne Ride | social | Distance up to 30 miles w/shorter routes and transit options. | Come and toast the new riding season on the annual Champagne Ride. We'll meander to the Northern suburbs of Evanston and Wilmette and a small park area within Plaza De Lago, and toast to the coming of Spring and the ride season for 2017. For those looking for a shorter ride, the 15 miles option will be included again this year. We'll toast some bubbly beverages and have a brief brunch picnic before we return back to Chicago. PROST! |

Chicago's Fabulous Fountains | social | 10 | Visit some of Chicago's more intriguing fountains with Greg Borzo, long-time cycling advocate, Chicago historian and author of the new book, "Chicago's Fabulou Fountains." You'll be surprised at the variety of fountains, and you'll hear fun, interesting stories about how these water-tossers came to be, what they represent, who built them, etc. The goal of the tour is to inform and entertain. You must be comforatble riding in traffic. Most of the route is over quiet streets and streets with bike lanes. Neverthless, short parts of the route will take us over busy streets, such as Clark, Michigan, LaSalle, etc. -- although these streets shouldn't be super busy on a Sunday morning. Alas, the ride will be limited to the first 12 people that RSVP. I will, however, keep a waiting list of extra RSVPs. And if this ride fills up quickly, I'll run another one this summer. The ride will start at the fountain at the corner of Clark & North and end at the very bike-friendly Spoke & Bird (1248 W. 18th Street) for food and/or refreshments. A good time will be had by all! NOTE: this tour will be somewhat different than the one I did for CCC last summer, which had a different route but covered a few of the same fountains as this new tour will cover. Join us! |
